Saxon's Math 3
program is carefully planned and packaged in a homeschool kit to make your
teaching experience easier. Third-graders will use simulations and games
to learn and practice new concepts. Social studies and science connections
are stressed. Children will skip count by whole numbers; compare and order
numbers; identify place value; identify ordinal position to twentieth;
identify and complete patterns; solve routine and nonroutine problems;
master all basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
facts; add and subtract multidigit numbers; multiply a multidigit number
by a single-digit number; divide by single-digit divisors; add positive
and negative numbers; picture, name, and order fractions; add and subtract
fractions with common denominators; measure to the nearest quarter inch,
millimeter, foot, and yard; identify volume of standard containers;
compare and measure mass; measure perimeter and area; tell time to the
minute; determine elapsed time; count money; make change for a dollar;
identify angles; identify lines of symmetry; identify function rules;
graph ordered pairs on a coordinate graph; tally; and create, read, and
write observations from real graphs, pictographs, bar graphs, Venn
diagrams, and line graphs.

Homeschool Kit Contents
Saxon's primary mathematics programs have been carefully
planned and packaged. Each homeschool kit comes with all necessary
materials required for one-on-one instruction. The Math 3
homeschool kit contains the following:
Teacher's Manual - The heart of
each K-3 program is the teacher's manual, which employs a unique
instructional format. It contains daily lessons, each of which includes
pre-class preparation instructions, a list of materials, and the entire
scripted lesson. Scripted lessons provide the parent with questioning
strategies and language designed to help children understand mathematical
concepts. Since the teacher's manual is nonconsumable, it can be used in
successive years with the purchase of new student workbooks and meeting
books. Student Workbooks -
A complete set of all necessary student
materials is bound in two consumable workbooks. Student materials include
written practice pages, masters, and fact cards.
Meeting Book - Each grade
level has its own consumable meeting book, which is used during The
Meeting at the beginning of each day. Lesson
Components Each lesson includes a
daily meeting, a new increment of instruction, guided practice of new and
previously introduced concepts, and number fact practice. Written and oral
assessments are built into the program and are given at regular intervals.
The Meeting - The daily
meeting is an opening exercise in which children practice skills related
to time, temperature, money, counting, patterning, and problem solving.
Number Fact Practice -
Children are presented with strategies to help learn number facts. They
are encouraged to recall facts through the use of pattern recognition.
Facts are practiced orally, and students test their skills in timed drills
(fact practice sheets), competing against past performances.
Written Practice - Children
complete the first part of the written practice with parent assistance.
The remaining half, which mirrors work completed in class, is done later
in the day. The time delay between practice sessions improves retention.
Written and Oral Assessments -
Each assessment questions children on skills they have
practiced for at least five lessons. In Math 3, a written
assessment is given every five lessons, an oral assessment every ten
lessons. |

Though developed by
Lorna Simmons, author of the successful Phonics K-2 series,
Phonics Intervention is not an extension of that series. Instead, it
was written specifically for older, struggling students who have
difficulty reading and spelling. This supplemental program is designed to
ensure that no student is left behind.
The program begins with a
quick review of consonants and then moves to vowels, decoding, spelling,
and reading comprehension. Students are taught explicit, predictable
strategies for decoding and spelling words. Worksheets, speed drills, and
vocabulary tests provide continual reinforcement of concepts learned as
well as a daily opportunity to read connected text. All student reading
materials contain fully controlled, decodable text to ensure student
success. A built-in vocabulary component helps increase vocabulary while
reinforcing phonics and spelling rules. Progressively difficult
alphabetizing activities teach dictionary skills. Cumulative assessments
occur at regular intervals, and specific remediation activities are
provided for students who have difficulty. Worksheets include twenty-five
fact-based paragraphs that teach students about U.S. history, so students
learn valuable information and don't feel as if they're in a remedial
reading class. |
|
Homeschool Kit Contents
The Phonics Intervention homeschool kit includes a
teacher's manual, classroom materials, and a student workbook. All three
components are fully integrated into the daily lesson plans.
Teacher's Manual - The
nonconsumable teacher's manual is well-organized, providing all the
information a parent needs to successfully teach. Every lesson provides
model dialogue and lesson plans for parents to follow, ensuring clear,
well-paced instruction. The manual also contains an assortment of
supplementary materials, including assessments; remediation activities;
vocabulary tests; speed drills; and extensive reading, spelling, and
vocabulary word lists. Student Workbook -
The consumable student workbook serves as both a
reference book and a practice book. It contains everything the student
will need throughout the year, including worksheets, assessments, speed
drills, word lists, and reference materials. The student keeps his or her
workbook at the completion of the program for continued reference and
review.
Classroom Materials - The nonconsumable
classroom materials include six card decks, one audiotape, and assorted
masters. Letter, picture, spelling, sight word, affix, and vocabulary
cards form the Review Decks. An audiotape of phonetic sounds allows
parents to hear the correct pronunciation(s) of each letter or letter
cluster. Finally, parents are provided with a variety of masters: a
pretest, a post test, a phonemic awareness assessment, assessment
recording forms, sight word evaluation recording forms, and a master sight
word list. |
