DIVE Math
teaches every lesson in each Saxon textbook from a Christian
worldview. DIVE lectures utilize a digital whiteboard which looks
and feels like being in a real classroom. Connecting new concepts to
previous ones, Dr. Shormann patiently teaches students step-by-step
how one concept builds on another while working several practice
problems per lesson. Students work interactively by taking notes and
working problems.
They can easily pause, rewind
or fast forward, learning at their own pace, thereby improving
retention and understanding. Based on European and Asian teaching
methods, Saxon's award-winning combination of incremental teaching,
spiral review and integration of algebra with geometry ensures
students know "all their math all the time", resulting in higher
scores on standardized tests and enabling students to confidently
move to higher levels of math.
DIVE Math 6/5 3rd edition
is typically used in fifth grade. The DIVE
Math 6/5 CD-ROM teaches all 120 Lessons and 10 Investigations
step-by-step. Because Saxon uses an incremental teaching approach,
each lecture is only 5-10 minutes long. Dr. Shormann builds lesson
upon lesson, slowly developing complex concepts from bite-sized
lessons that are easy to grasp. Students watch the lecture and take
notes, working the practice problems Dr. Shormann presents, and
pausing and rewinding as necessary until a concept is understood. If
students want additional practice, they can complete the Example
problems and Practice Set in the Saxon textbook. After the lesson,
students complete the 30-question Problem Set in the Saxon
text. While a few problems in the Problem Set come from the new
concept, most problems come from previous lessons. Each problem is
cross-referenced back to the lesson where it was taught, allowing
students to quickly review any concept.
This unique method of spiral review improves critical
thinking skills, increases long term retention, and raises
standardized test scores. However, this method can be difficult to
teach because of the seemingly random presentation of topics. That
is why Saxon's founder, John Saxon, recommended teacher training for
all of his courses. DIVE CDs provide that teacher, as Dr. Shormann
explains how new topics connect to previously learned
material, helping students see the "big picture". Also, when a
student gets stuck or forgets how to work a problem, they simply
click on the DIVE lesson where the concept was originally taught and
watch that lesson again. The same can be done when correcting tests.
This makes it very easy to fill in any gaps as they show up.
Math 6/5 expands on
Saxon Math 5/4 with more advanced lessons on divisibility, integers,
prime and composite numbers, powers, roots, and probability. Math
6/5 continues with concepts introduced in Math 5/4, helping to
extend a childs understanding and sharpen mental math skills. It
teaches
multiplication, division, word problems, fractions, decimals,
percents, basic geometry, and negative numbers. Every tenth lesson
has an Investigation, which is an extensive examination of a
specific math topic. Success in math requires that students spend
time memorizing basic facts, and Saxon 6/5 Facts Practice Worksheets
provide plenty of facts practice.

Though developed by
Lorna Simmons, author of the successful Phonics K-2 series,
Phonics Intervention is not an extension of that series. Instead, it
was written specifically for older, struggling students who have
difficulty reading and spelling. This supplemental program is designed to
ensure that no student is left behind.
The program begins with a
quick review of consonants and then moves to vowels, decoding, spelling,
and reading comprehension. Students are taught explicit, predictable
strategies for decoding and spelling words. Worksheets, speed drills, and
vocabulary tests provide continual reinforcement of concepts learned as
well as a daily opportunity to read connected text. All student reading
materials contain fully controlled, decodable text to ensure student
success. A built-in vocabulary component helps increase vocabulary while
reinforcing phonics and spelling rules. Progressively difficult
alphabetizing activities teach dictionary skills. Cumulative assessments
occur at regular intervals, and specific remediation activities are
provided for students who have difficulty. Worksheets include twenty-five
fact-based paragraphs that teach students about U.S. history, so students
learn valuable information and don't feel as if they're in a remedial
reading class. |
|
Homeschool Kit Contents:
The Phonics Intervention homeschool kit includes a
teacher's manual, classroom materials, and a student workbook. All three
components are fully integrated into the daily lesson plans.
Teacher's Manual - The
nonconsumable teacher's manual is well-organized, providing all the
information a parent needs to successfully teach. Every lesson provides
model dialogue and lesson plans for parents to follow, ensuring clear,
well-paced instruction. The manual also contains an assortment of
supplementary materials, including assessments; remediation activities;
vocabulary tests; speed drills; and extensive reading, spelling, and
vocabulary word lists. Student Workbook -
The consumable student workbook serves as both a
reference book and a practice book. It contains everything the student
will need throughout the year, including worksheets, assessments, speed
drills, word lists, and reference materials. The student keeps his or her
workbook at the completion of the program for continued reference and
review.
Classroom Materials - The nonconsumable
classroom materials include six card decks, one audiotape, and assorted
masters. Letter, picture, spelling, sight word, affix, and vocabulary
cards form the Review Decks. An audiotape of phonetic sounds allows
parents to hear the correct pronunciation(s) of each letter or letter
cluster. Finally, parents are provided with a variety of masters: a
pretest, a post test, a phonemic awareness assessment, assessment
recording forms, sight word evaluation recording forms, and a master sight
word list. |
