Homeschool Kit Contents

Saxon's primary mathematics programs have been carefully planned and packaged. Each homeschool kit comes with all necessary materials required for one-on-one instruction. The Math K homeschool kit contains the following:

Teacher's Manual - The heart of each K-3 program is the teacher's manual, which employs a unique instructional format. It contains daily lessons, each of which includes pre-class preparation instructions, a list of materials, and the entire scripted lesson. Scripted lessons provide the parent with questioning strategies and language designed to help children understand mathematical concepts. Since the teacher's manual is nonconsumable, it can be used in successive years with the purchase of new student workbooks and meeting books.

Meeting Book - Each grade level has its own consumable meeting book, which is used during The Meeting at the beginning of each day.

Lesson Components

Each lesson includes a daily meeting, a new increment of instruction, guided practice of new and previously introduced concepts, and number fact practice. Written and oral assessments are built into the program and are given at regular intervals.

The Meeting - The daily meeting is an opening exercise in which children practice skills related to time, temperature, money, counting, patterning, and problem solving.

Number Fact Practice - Children are presented with strategies to help learn number facts. They are encouraged to recall facts through the use of pattern recognition. Facts are practiced orally, and students test their skills in timed drills (fact practice sheets), competing against past performances.

Written Practice - Children complete the first part of the written practice with parent assistance. The remaining half, which mirrors work completed in class, is done later in the day. The time delay between practice sessions improves retention.

Oral Assessments - Each assessment questions children on skills they have practiced for at least five lessons. In Math K, all assessments are oral, and they are given every seven lessons.

Saxon Phonics K Homeschool Kit

1st Edition 2001

Phonics K, First Edition Homeschool Kit

$97.95 Order Now

Saxon's Phonics K program has been carefully planned and packaged in a homeschool kit to make your teaching experience easier. Phonics K begins by working with auditory discrimination skills to assess children's phonemic awareness -- that is, their cognizance of the different sounds of the English language. Phonemic awareness indicates that children are ready to learn to read. When they are ready, the parent begins to introduce each letter individually. In order to allow plenty of time for exposure, one week is devoted to the introduction of each letter.

Phonics K students will:

learn the sound, name, and written form of each letter

review daily all previously taught letters to ensure sufficient exposure to and mastery of each letter

create words by blending sounds

spell by unblending sounds

never be asked to read or write sounds that have not been taught

be assessed regularly to monitor progress

participate in games and activities that motivate, reinforce, and remediate

Homeschool Kit Contents

Saxon's primary phonics programs have been carefully planned and packaged. All you need to successfully teach each program is included in the homeschool kit. Phonics K, Phonics 1, and Phonics 2 homeschool kits contain the following:

Teacher's Manual - The Teacher's Manual has been carefully written to use language and provide activities appropriate for the student's grade level. The unique instructional format provides the parent with directions and lesson scripts that include possible student responses. Each lesson contains a list of materials, preparation instructions, the entire scripted lesson, and reduced versions of applicable student materials. Also in the manual are introductory materials explaining how to implement the program, coding charts, a glossary, word lists that may be used for extension activities, and detailed game directions.

Teaching Tools - Teaching tools are included to help implement the program. These include review decks, kid cards, a rule book, an audiotape, and a video instructional guide.

Literature Extensions - Literature Extensions, now part of the Phonics K-2 teaching tools, supplement phonics instruction by incorporating quality works of classic and contemporary literature. All titles have been carefully selected from core reading lists and should be readily available in libraries or bookstores. A booklet of fourteen extensions is provided for each level of the primary phonics series. Each extension provides practice in literary analysis and comprehension skills as well as an activity for phonics reinforcement.

Student Materials - The student is given a set of grade-appropriate practice materials with which to review the concepts he or she is learning. The set includes a two-part student workbook, student readers, and a colorful alphabet strip with D'Nealian-style letters on one side and block-style letters on the other. Phonics K and 1 include a complete set of alphabet letter tiles. Phonics 1 and 2 contain an irregular spelling booklet.
